Hazelnut Pollen
Hazelnut Pollen
Hazelnut trees produce monecious flowers which means that there are separate male and female flowers on each tree. The pollen that each tree produces is incompatible with its own female flowers or any female flowers of the same variety.
For that reason, different varieties need to be planted in every orchard. Pollinizer varieties produce very few nuts because they have been bred to produce an abundance of male flowers and fewer female flowers. Pollinizers must be chosen carefully as not all of them are compatible with all main crop varieties.
Assisted Pollination
An alternative to natural pollination is assisted pollination. We harvest pollen from our our pollen yards and apply it to the trees in our orchards. This method of pollination ensures that each tree receives and optimal amount of pollen.
Pollen sales
If you are interested in optimizing pollination in your orchards, please contact us at 519-350-2801 to inquire about our pollen selection. We also perform custom application of pollen in producers orchards. Prices are as follows.
Pollen - $50 per gram (enough to pollinate half an acre)
Custom application $40 per acre.
Elimination of Pollinizers
We currently have two test orchards planted in which no pollinizer varieties have been planted. The objective of these orchards is to test whether pollinizer trees are needed in the orchard at all. Pollinizers consume 5 to 20% of all orchards and produce few marketable nuts in return. If the pollinizers are eliminated from the orchard, the resulting yield increase is substantial.
